Doing Business As(DBA)

What is Doing Business As(DBA)?

Business Name Registration, otherwise known as DBA (Doing Business As), refers to the name used by the business other than the legal name. The abbreviation for DBA can be d/b/a or dba. This gives a business an opportunity to conduct its activities under another name without necessarily having a separate legal entity.

The Reasons Behind Companies Choosing to Have a DBA

Normally, the legal name of a company is automatically determined depending on its organizational structure:

  • Sole proprietorships: The legal name will be automatically the name of the person who runs the company.
  • Corporations/LLCs: The legal name will be whatever name was chosen when the corporation/LLC was formed.

By using a DBA, the company can operate under an alternative name, which is usually more consumer-friendly.
