Sales and Marketing Efficiency

What Is Sales and Marketing Efficiency?

Sales and marketing efficiency is one of the key indicators that businesses can use to measure the return on their sales/marketing investments. It is a tool that companies use to find out if their spending on getting new customers and growing an existing customer base is giving them a good financial return.

The sales and marketing efficiency ratio is mostly handy for SaaS and subscription companies, in which recurring revenue and customer acquisition expenses are the main focus areas.

How Is the Sales and Marketing Efficiency Ratio Calculated?

A basic way to measure sales and marketing efficiency is:

Sales and Marketing Efficiency Ratio = Revenue Generated ÷ Sales and Marketing Expenses

For instance, let’s say a firm earns $2 million in the form of revenue and at the same time spends $1 million on sales and marketing activities, then the efficiency ratio (sales & marketing) will become 2. 0

Precision of the actual calculation mainly hinges on two variables: whether a company accounts for its entire revenue or only gross new Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) or in some cases, a mix of both. The other factor is the timeframe of the analysis. It is important that businesses stick to the same approach when evaluating performance over different periods.

Why Is Sales and Marketing Efficiency Important?

A strong efficiency ratio can indicate that a company is generating meaningful revenue relative to its sales and marketing investment. A declining ratio may signal rising acquisition costs, weaker conversion rates, lower customer spending, or inefficient marketing and sales activities.

Businesses can use the metric to:

Evaluate growth spending: Understand whether sales and marketing investments are producing sufficient returns.

Improve budgeting: Identify where resources may generate stronger results.

Track performance: Compare efficiency across periods and growth stages.

Support planning: Use efficiency trends when developing revenue and spending forecasts.

For SaaS businesses, sales and marketing efficiency is often considered alongside ARR, customer acquisition cost (CAC), customer lifetime value (CLV), and retention metrics to provide a broader view of growth efficiency.
